Cambodia Family Transformation
JJoy-VBC Project ID027: Hoeum, Then, Sopheak, Chhan, Oeun, Somath, and Vichhay
Construction: March 2025
In March 2025, JJoy Foundation received an urgent request for help. A family living in the Apsara Zone of Siem Reap lost their home along with all of their savings and important documents in a house fire. Could we help? Thanks to generous supporters of JJoy’s partnership with Volunteer Building Cambodia, the answer was of course a resounding and immediate “YES”.
Before the fire, there were seven members of this family: the patriarch Hoeum, his wife Then, their 3 children, 1 son in law, and one grandson. To compound this family’s grief, the matriarch Then passed away 3 days after the fire.
At the time of the fire, no one was home. Some local women noticed the flames but there was nothing anyone could do. The fire raged for almost 2 hours and was determined to have been caused by an electrical short circuit. In addition to the home and their personal belongings, the family’s entire savings of 2 million Riel (about $500) and all of their official documents (IDs, land ownership papers, etc) were lost.
The family is supported by Hoeum, who works for the Apsara authority earning $150 per month, and his son in law Chhan, who earns $6 per day. Sokpheak stays home to care for her 2 year old son Vichhay. Oeun is currently unemployed and Somath is studying in Grade 9.
We wish this family all the best as they put their lives back together and strive for a better future.
