Cambodia Family Transformation
JJoy-VBC Project ID028: Chet, Bin, Nisa and Reaksa
Project Sponsored by The Bell Family
Construction: March 2025
In March 2025, JJoy Foundation initiated a project with our partner Volunteer Building Cambodia to provide a family with a healthy home, sanitary latrine, clean water system and solar power. This project was funded by The Bell Family, who travelled to Cambodia to participate in the construction. This special JJoy team was made up of family members from 3 generations!
Let’s meet the family!
Chet and Bin have a rudimentary and unsafe home on the outskirts of Siem Reap. The home is rudimentary and unsafe. Chet works near the border with Thailand earning $16 per week doing construction labor so he often is not home. Bin cares for their daughter (9) and son (4) who study in grade 5 and kindergarten, respectively. Bin earns $3 per week weaving Khmer baskets when she has extra time.
The family was eager for the project to begin and over the course of the week, there were so many transformations. Our youngest volunteers, who had little experience outside the US learned, that while our circumstances are very different, people around the world are really very similar in their hearts. They noted how kind and hardworking everyone was and how we share dreams of a brighter future.
As this house took shape, more than just a home was built! The relationships established this week are memories for a lifetime.
Welcome home!
6 Month Update: September 2025
This project has been life changing for this sweet family. In addition to the health benefits of having a sanitary latrine and safe drinking water, they have experienced a ripple effect in other areas of life. Having a safe and sturdy home means they no longer worry about damage during storms. The children are now free to just be kids, playing in the yard, sleeping and eating better. As a result, they are also doing better in school
While this project gives the family a good start, they recognize and are dedicated to improving their lives on their own. Chet continues to work in construction near the Thai border and has increased his earning to $35-$40 per week. Bin made the difficult decision to join him in order to earn more income, leaving the children in the care of her parents. She now also makes around $30 per week.
While challenges continue, the future is bright for this family.
“We are truly grateful to The Bell Family through Jjoy Foundation for their kindness and support.”
