Cambodia Family Transformation
JJoy-VBC Project ID007a: Chhem, Chhoy, Kai, Chhoch, Koeur, and Sreleak
Sponsored by an Amazing Anonymous JJoy Donor
Construction: April 2024
In April 2024, JJoy Foundation initiated a project with our partner Volunteer Building Cambodia to provide a family with a new home, sanitary latrine and solar panel. This project was funded by an amazing JJoy Donor who wishes to remain anonymous.
Let’s meet the family!
Chhem (60 years old) lives with her daughter Chhoy on the outskirts of Siem Reap. Together they earn about $2.50 per day weaving Khmer baskets. The two women are the primary caretakers of 4 of Chhem’s grandchildren. The oldest, Kai (16 years old), stopped attending school after grade 9 and now works as a duck shepherd earning $90 per month. The 3 younger children are all attending school.
This family faces a variety of challenges and we are thrilled to help them take this next step toward a better life!
6 Month Update: DATE
Since moving into their new home, this family has experienced an incredible transformation. Kai has continued to work as a duck shepherd and has increased his increased salary to $137.50 per month. The family no longer needs to make continual repairs to their home and have been able to divert some of their income into farming. Chhem and Chhoy now grow rice and casava on a 2.5 hectare plot. They use the harvest to feed their family and sell at the market for even more income.
These changes are a true testament to the fact that a safe home is more than just a place to live. When families have the security that a sturdy, healthy home provides, they are able to thrive!
