JJoy-VBC Project ID004: Preak, Nhatt and Makara

Sponsored and Built by Volunteer Team VBC-240114-TV

Construction: January 2024

In January 2024, JJoy Foundation initiated a project with Volunteer Building Cambodia to provide a family with a new home equipped with a sanitary latrine, solar panel and clean water system. This project was funded by donations from JJoy Supporters and the 6 amazing volunteers who participated in JJoy’s first team to Cambodia.

Let’s meet the family!

When the team arrived, Preak and Nhatt were living with their son Makara in a simple house made of palm fronds, sticks and plastic. Preak was working as a construction worker earning $7.50 a day on the days when he can find work. Nhatt takes care of their son, but also was earning a few dollars by weaving baskets. The parents were focused on giving their son a good life and Makara attends primary school.

Over the course of one week, their future took shape!  Their new home will last for many years and provide the family with safety, improved health, and happiness. The smiles were immediate.  Welcome home!

6 Month Update: July 2024

Six months after moving into their new home, the lives of Preak, Nhatt and Makara have greatly improved.  The new home provides the family with security and a sense of confidence. Preak has gained steady employment which takes him further from home – something he is only able to do because he knows that his family will be safe in their new home while he is away.  Instead of working as a day laborer doing construction, Preak now works as a gardener earning a steady $150 per month.

And we also have the best kind of news!  A few weeks ago, Nhatt gave birth to a second child!  This family is thriving in their new home and we couldn’t be happier.
