Cambodia Family Transformation
JJoy-VBC Project ID011: Thort, Ny, Sothy, Sothan and Sinuon
Construction: July 2024
In July 2024, JJoy Foundation initiated a project with our partner Volunteer Building Cambodia to provide a family with a home, a clean water well, a sanitary latrine and a solar panel. This project was funded entirely by donations from JJoy Supporters.
Let’s meet the family!
Thort (59) and his wife Ny (66) live with their three adult children. Thort is chronically ill and does not work. Ny does what she can, but she also suffers from several ailments. Sometimes she earns a few dollars working at weddings, but her job is intermittent. She does need to spend about $18 per month on medications.
Thort and Ny’s children try to help out. Sothy (30) and Sinuon (22) also work at weddings earning about $120 a month. Sothan (27) does road construction and can earn $125 per year.
The family is very appreciative of the support they are receiving and are excited to begin the next chapter of their lives!
6 Month Update: January 2025
After living in this new home for 6 months, things are looking up.
The family’s previous home was just a tent covered with a plastic tarp. It could not protect them from rain or wind, especially during storms, so things were always damp. In addition, there was no way to secure the space so animals could enter making it unsafe and unhealthy. Because the living area was very small, it was necessary to move all of their belongs according to when it was time to sleep or cook or just relax.
Now these problems have been relieved. Their sturdy home protects them from storms and animals. They sleep better and are healthier.
The toilet has also eased their physical burdens, since it is located close to their house instead of the 10 minute walk they used to take to utilize their neighbors facilities.
The family continues to work hard to support themselves and take good care of their home. Because they are sick less frequently, the family now has a combined income of about $500 per month.
One Year Update: July 2025
A healthy home leads to a healthy life. As a result of their improved living conditions, Thort has now been able to return to work. Hooray! He and his son work at the same company and together they earn about $15 per day. Ny is finally able to relax and retire, knowing that their family needs are being taken care of by her husband and son.
In addition to earning more income, the family has also been able to save money because of their solar panel. They used to pay neighbors $5 per month for electricity.
The family has utilized some of their savings to purchase a motorbike for their daughter who is working in Phnom Penh and earning $130 per month – further enhancing this family’s prospects for the future.
Two Year Update: July 2026
Coming soon!
