JJoy-VBC Project ID005: Sopheak, Sopha and Rotana

Sponsored by Volunteer Team VBC-240114-TV

Construction: January 2024

In January 2024, JJoy Foundation initiated a project with Volunteer Building Cambodia to provide a family with a new sanitary latrine.

Let’s meet the family!

Sopheak and Sopha live with their young daughter in the Angkor Thom District of Siem Reap Province.  Sopheak is a construction worker who earns $7.50 on days when he is able to find work.  Mom stays home with the little one!

Although their living conditions are difficult, they are excited for this special project which will improve their health.  Congratulations!

6 Month Update: July 2024

In the 6 months since Sopheak and Sopha received their new latrine, amazing changes have taken place!  The family’s health and hygiene have noticeably improved and they are experiencing fewer instances of illness.

As a result of these changes in living conditions, the family’s standing in the community has been elevated.  They are viewed as role models for adopting better hygiene practices and are known to encourage others to work to improve their hygiene as well.

We couldn’t be happier for this family!

One Year Update: January 2025

It’s already been a year since Sopheak, Sopha and Rotana have been using their sanitary latrine and they continue to benefit from this life changing gift.  They are now trained in basic maintenance to ensure the longevity of the latrine.

They have expressed their happiness with the safety, dignity and privacy they now have.  Before this latrine was installed, they had no facilities and were forced to use the nearby forest for bathing and to relieve themselves which was difficult, especially at night.

Thank you to all of the donors who supported this project and ensured that Rotana will grow up with her basic sanitation needs met!

Two Year Update: January 2026
