Cambodia Family Transformation
JJoy-VBC Project ID003: Rann, Sieb, Naro and Sreysoy
Sponsored and Built by Volunteer Team VBC-240114-TV
Construction: January 2024
In January 2024, JJoy Foundation initiated a project with Volunteer Building Cambodia to provide a family with a new home equipped with a sanitary latrine, solar panel and clean water system. This project was funded by donations from JJoy Supporters and the 6 amazing volunteers who participated in JJoy’s first team to Cambodia.
Let’s meet the family!
When the team arrived, Rann and Sieb were living with their son Naro and daughter Sreysoy in a substandard house. Rann was working intermittently as a construction worker earning $7.50 a day. Sieb is a housewife who cares for their children. Naro was attending kindergarten and Sreysoy will attend school when she is old enough.
Over the course of one week, their future took shape! Their new home and latrine will last for many years and provide the family with safety, improved health, and happiness. The smiles were immediate. Welcome home!
6 Month Update: July 2024
Six months after moving into their new home, the lives of Rann, Sieb, Naro and Sreysoy have greatly improved. The new home provides the family with great safety and comfort. They are dry in even the hardest rains thanks to the studry roof and solid walls. For the fist time in their lives, they sleep soundly!
Their economic situation is also improving. Rann used to struggle to save money since his family was often sick. With their new home and sanitary latrine, illness is reduced. He has been able to obtain a new steady job as a fisherman on Tonle Sap Lake and is regularly earning $145/month. Sieb has begun making Khmer baskets for some extra income. Together, they are starting to save money.
Because of their improved financial situation, the family has begun making improvements to their house which make it feel more like home. They have painted the house pillars, shutters and latrine door and have also put in a table and chairs on the ground level to expand their space.
Congratulations Rann, Sieb, Naro and Sreysoy!
One Year Update: January 2025
This family continues to thrive. Rann is now working steadily and earns $50/week for his family. They have the support of their parents and parents-in-law to help raise the children and with a strong house, they no longer worry about safety at home when going to work.
The sanitary latrine and water filter have also made a tangible impact on the health and happiness of this family. Before it’s construction, the family relied on makeshift and distant facilities that lacked hygiene and security. Now their daily routines are transformed and they celebrate this clean and safe space.
The family expressed thanks and continue to be amazed by the transformation they have experienced. We even caught Grandma on camera with Sreysoy. We’re so happy for them!
Two Year Update: January 2026
