Blood letting

Some of the treatments administed during our time in Upper Mustang were surprising.  On our first day, a patient at the 8th Annual Upper Mustang Health Camp was treated for migranes and qi stagnation by Amchi-la Dr Tenjing Dharke Gurung using the technique of bloodletting. She did not flinch – this was not her first rodeo.  A tourniquet was first applied around the head, then the area as cleaned. A small cut as made and blood was allowed to flow for 30-60 seconds. This is a rarely used but valued treatment for patients with limited options.
