Cambodia Family Transformation

JJoy-VBC Project ID024: Pos, Samban, Thun, Bon, Poan and Sokum

Construction: February 2025

In December 2024, JJoy Foundation initiated a project with our partner Volunteer Building Cambodia to provide a family with a home and a sanitary latrine.

Let’s meet the family!

Pos and Samban are in their early 40s and neither have any formal education.  Pos works as a day construction laborer earning $5/day when he can.  Pos spends her time taking care of their home. They live with their 4 children in a home of bamboo and palm leaves, which is unsafe and unhealthy. They do not have a latrine currently and must walk 300-400 m to use a relatives’ facility, which is uncomfortable for them and dangerous at night.

Even though (or maybe because) they did not attend school, they are adamant that their children receive an education.  Their son Thun is now a freshman in college.  Daughter Bon is 17 and stopped school in grade 8 in order to help the family survive, she does construction work and earns $50 a month.  The younger children, son Poan (age 13) and daughter Sokum (age 9) are studying in grade 7 and 3, respectively.

This project will have a big impact on this family.  Congratulations on your new home!

Welcome Home, Pich, Saouert and Tena!

6 Month Update: August 2026

Living in their new home provides this family with a sense of security and peacefulness that they have never experienced before. They sleep better, worry less and eat better too. They even happily shared that their new home also provides plenty of space for social interaction with their community, who are now more present in their lives!

The toilet in their own property allows the family convenient and private facilities, without having to walk long distances to use a shared toilet.

Economically, the family has seen big changes.  The house no longer needs constant attention and repairs, which allows the family to save more. They have also sought more stable employment: Pos now has a steady construction job earning $10 per day, Sambun has begun farming casava in a community plot and earns $5 per day, and has moved to Thailand for work and sends home $50 per month.  The families monthly income now exceeds $300!  And they aren’t finished yet.  They are currently renting 3 1-hectare plots of land to farm rice and will soon see the proceeds.  They have also added vegetables for self-consumption around their house and are raising 2 cows which will be sold for profit.

This family is full of self-dedication and ingenuity.  Their future is bright!
