Cambodia Family Transformation
JJoy-VBC Project ID0012: Yat, Sambour and Lors
Sponsored and Built by Volunteers on VBC-241201-CP
Construction: December 2024
In December 2024, JJoy Foundation initiated a project with our partner Volunteer Building Cambodia to provide a family with a health home, a sanitary latrine, a clean water system and solar power. This project was generously funded by donations from JJoy’s volunteer team VBC-241201-CP.
Let’s meet the family!
Yat is a 58 year old woman who lives with her two adult sons. Sambour left school after grade 7 and now works as a construction laborer earning $6.50 per day. Lors has just graduated from high school – congratulations!
The family has faced many challenges. Their current home is unsafe and requires constant care, which keeps Sambour from working steadily. They borrow electricity and water from neighbrors, which is a source of worry. And the only latrine avaiallbe to them is a 15 minute walk from their house.
Over the course of a week, this family saw their lives change before their very eyes.
We welcome this family home and wish them a happy and healthy life!
6 Month Update: June 2025
After living in their home for 6 months, the lives of this family has dramatically improved.
Having a toilet close to home makes the family feel safer and more comfortable. They are also more confident and feel a sense of dignity that they have not known in the past. Having their own reliable sources of clean water and electricity boost their morale even more! All of these improvements also mean the family is sick less often.
With renewed sense of confidence and safety, the family’s economic situation has also improved. Yat now spends time taking care of herself and as a result of her improved health, she has been able to start a business weaving Khmer baskets. Sambour left his construction job and now works close to home on different farms. Lors received a scholarship to the University in Phnom Penh and while studying, he works at a part time job. Between the three of them, this family now earns around $260-$310 per month.
The family has begun saving money for the first time. With some of their savings, they have extended the room around the house to give them more living space and a large kitchen. They have also created a small hut for Yat to weave her baskets and a small barn for livestock.
Yat feels safer and happier in this new life. She is pleased with her new occupation and is known as a hard working. She is also proud of her youngest son for studying at the University and hopes he will have a good career in the future.
We couldn’t be happier for this family!
